Azim Premji Foundation enters healthcare

More than 20 years after setting up the Azim Premji Foundation to improve public school education, the country's most generous billionaire turned to healthcare for the poor. The foundation will soon set up primary care clinics in some of India's most backward cities, followed by multiple specialty hospitals and medical colleges, said two executives aware of the development. The decision to make healthcare a second priority represents the biggest change in the foundation's history since it was founded in 2001.

Primary care centers will be the starting point, these things will emerge like education in a small town. In the next, two to three years foundation plans to set up a hospital, and a medical college. The foundation will not be limited by money. Currently, the health program is overseen by Anand Swaminathan and managed by the Azim Premji Development Foundation (APFD), the governing body that houses the Azim Premji Foundation and Azim Premji University.
