Tata Steel executes implosion of two obsolete units in Jamshedpur coke plant

Tata Steel said on December 18 that it had successfully imploded two old coke plant units at its Jamshedpur-based manufacturing site.

The antiquated coke plant units will be replaced with modern counterparts that are equipped with "latest technology" and are environmentally beneficial, according to a corporate announcement.

"Tata Steel is replacing the old Coke Oven Batteries 5, 6, and 7 (combined capacity of 1MnTPA) at Jamshedpur with new Coke Oven Batteries 6A and 6B (combined capacity of 1MnTPA)," the company said.

According to Tata Steel, the implosion operation was a "first-of-its-kind" of engineering activity, as it was carried out in a functioning steel mill, including colossal buildings, "tallest in India".

The business stated it demolished a "110-meter-high concrete chimney (Battery#6 Chimney) and a 48-meter-tall coal tower" today.

The implosions were carried out with the assistance of the contract partner, Edifice Engineering India, and with the assistance of Jet Demolition South Africa, according to the statement.

Previously, on September 4, a "model repair shop of 12-meter height" at the Jameshpur facility was demolished, followed on November 27 by the demolition of a "obsolete 110-meter-tall chimney (Battery #5 Chimney)" at the coke factory.

The 110-meter-tall chimneys were controlled implosion using a mechanical hinge, allowing the structure to fall in one direction with zero degrees of variation.

It went on to say that "water curtains" were used to manage dust and "trenches with berms" were used to absorb vibration, and "steel wires mesh" was employed to keep debris from being distributed.

"We have completed an essential step by destroying old Coke Plant facilities in a safe and regulated manner. This demonstrates our dedication to operational efficiency, safety, resource optimization, and a long-term growth plan "Vice President (Safety, Health, and Sustainability) at Tata Steel.

"The flawless execution of these difficult implosions demonstrates our exceptional engineering capabilities," said Avneesh Gupta, vice president of the business (TQM and engineering & projects).
