US Health Dept warns of Royal Ransomware targeting healthcare

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a new warning to the country's medical institutions regarding an ongoing attack by a relatively new organization, the Royal Ransomware Gang. HHS' security team, the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HC3), released that ransomware groups are behind multiple attacks targeting U.S. healthcare organizations. HC3 attacks against the healthcare and public health (HPH) sector have been known since their emergence, the organization added.

Based on previous successful attacks, this ransomware group is focused on targeting medical institutions in the United States. So far, in each medical breach, Royal claims to have leaked online all the data allegedly stolen from the victim's network. But given that PFC helps thousands of U.S. healthcare, government, and utility organizations ensure timely payment of their customers' bills, the attack could have a far greater impact.
