The engineering company Siemens was given a contract to construct 1,200 electric locomotives with a 9000 HP (horse power) at Dahod, Gujarat, for more than Rs 20,000 crore. In April of this year, Indian Railways published a tender for the construction and upkeep of 9,000 HP electric locomotives at Dahod.

According to a BSE filing, Siemens Limited has won the contract to build nine thousand horsepower electric locomotives in Dahod, Gujarat, India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April lay the foundation stone for the manufacturing project of 9,000 HP electric locomotives at the Railway production plant in Dahod. The cost of the project was estimated at roughly Rs 20,000 crore.

Over 10,000 people are planned to be employed directly and indirectly as a result of the Dahod workshop's conversion to an electric locomotive manufacturing facility, which was originally built in 1926 for the periodic refurbishment of steam locomotives.

Over the course of 11 years, from 2023–2024 to 2033–2034, the Dahod facility will construct 1,200 locomotives. The successful bidder shall furnish five locomotives in the first year and thirty-five in the second year. Up to 80 locomotives will be delivered per year in the third and fourth years. To produce 100 locomotives a year starting in the fifth and sixth years, the production will increase. After then, 160 locomotives will be constructed per year until 2033–2034. On all Indian Railways routes, a single 9000 HP, 6-axle Co-Co locomotive would be used to move loads weighing 4,500 tonnes at an average speed of 75 kmph.

In the first quarter of 2024, Indian Railway expects to get its first locomotive from the Dahod plant. A railway halt along the Delhi-Mumbai route is known as Dahod, and the locomotive will be manufactured using green energy and will sport a label that reads "green manufacturing."
