Ericsson and Samsung sign global patent license agreement

In 7 May, 2021 Ericsson and Samsung have reached a multi-year agreement on global patent licenses between the two companies. In this agreement they get mutual benefit from the patents of cellular technologies. Ericsson is a Swedish multinational telecommunication and networking company, headquartered in Stockholm. The company offers services and software in information and communication technology for telecommunications operators, mobile and fixed broadband, operation and business support services. Whereas Samsung is a South Korean MNC headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It deals in various industries like textiles, insurance, food processing. But Samsung is a global leader in electronics industry.

Ericsson is highly investing in the research and development of global mobile standards and licensing its essential patents on FRAND (fair reasonable and non-discriminatory) terms. This agreement allows the access of both companies on the technology and intellectual property and it eventually helps the consumer and enterprises both. This agreement proves to be a reward for the investors and stake-holders for their major up-front investment in research and development in each mobile generation.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson says: “We are delighted to sign a mutually beneficial agreement with Samsung. This important deal confirms the value of our patent portfolio and further illustrates Ericsson’s commitment to FRAND principles.”
