On 20Th Nov, 2020, in a significant move by the US FDA, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has chosen to outline new guidelines identified with consideration of enlistment and assessment of unfamiliar food-producing offices. In such a manner, the zenith food controller has given a Draft on Food Safety and Standards (Import) Amendment Regulations, 2020, on November 16, and looked for remarks from partners inside 60 days.

 

In the Import Regulations of 2017, the FSSAI proposed to add another 'Section XIV' on enlistment and investigation of unfamiliar food fabricating offices, wherein dependent on explicit danger, classes of food items brought into India will be chosen. The examination or review of foreign food-producing offices would be creating such classifications of nourishments and has been made compulsory. As per the draft, the offices falling under such classifications and envious to fare such articles of food should enroll with the food authority before trading to any other country.

 

"Unfamiliar food-producing offices either straightforwardly or through merchant may apply for enlistment," peruses the draft. The draft likewise endorses handling of uses for enrollment of unfamiliar food fabricating offices. The food authority will name authorities from FSSAI and applicable services or divisions with the end goal of investigation under these guidelines. FSSAI will likewise recommend the way wherein the study will be finished.

 

"Unfamiliar food fabricating office discovered to be in consistence with FSS Act Rules and Regulations made thereunder will be enlisted as unfamiliar food-producing offices for a time of five years," peruses the draft. Further, the draft lays arrangements for reviewing unfamiliar food fabricating offices wherein a foreign food-producing office that requires compulsory assessment will be examined by an evaluating office perceived by the food authority.

 

According to the draft, the Food Authority will determine the frequency of audits from time to time. And if "the foreign food fabricating facility and their food items are found not to comply with FSS Act Rules and Regulations, their registration as foreign food manufacturing facilities shall be suspended as the foreign food-producing facility. Perhaps, the Food Authority may review same after giving a chance for hearing or clarification, as deemed fit," reads the draft.
