On 4 April 2021, SII CEO Adar Poonawalla stated that the company has received orders for a total of 26 crore doses, of which it has already delivered over 15 crore. SII has secured a 100 percent advance of Rs 1,732.5 crore from the government for the next tranche of 11 crore doses to be delivered in the coming months, according to Poonawalla.

Everyone wants the vaccine to be available in the quickest possible time and SII is making every effort to achieve it, Poonawalla said.

The world is devastated by the pandemic by loss of many people globally. The second wave of COVID-19 has hit several countries such as India and Brazil. In India, second wave has created havoc with the highest ever spike in the world. More than 3 lakhs cases are being reported daily in India. To fight against the pandemic government has started vaccination drive for people above 18 years.

Poonawalla said it is not possible to ramp up production overnight and as India has a huge population, it is not an easy task to produce enough doses for everyone. Even the most advanced countries and companies are struggling with relatively smaller populations, he said. Everyone wants the vaccine to be available in the quickest possible time and SII is making every effort to achieve it, Poonawalla said.
