According to the latest Tea Board data, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the second largest importer of tea from India after the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as a bloc. Between January and September 2022, the UAE imported about 28.58 million kilograms of tea from India. This is a 159% increase over the same nine months in 2021. CIS countries imported 38.06 million kilograms in the same period in 2022, up from 33.34 million kilograms in the corresponding period of 2021. Exporters are looking for other routes as supplies to Iraq, once a major importer could drop to zero, according to tea industry sources.

The Indian Tea Association (ITA), the umbrella organization for producers, forecasts that Indian tea exports will reach 230 million kilograms in 2022, up from 196 million kilograms in 2021, making it in the countries with the highest beverage consumption.
